Feeling Naughty About Avocado? You’re Not Alone!

Many of my clients tell me they feel “naughty” when they eat avocado or ask me whether avocado is "bad" - can you relate? 🥑

Here’s the thing, avocado is just a food. There is no such thing as good or bad foods - all foods are okay to have. Some foods we need more of, some less of, but none should make you feel guilty.

What is an avocado?

Avocado is a stone fruit packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fibre, and antioxidants. It’s a good source of:

  • Fibre

  • B vitamins

  • Vitamins A, C, E, and K

  • Folate

  • Potassium

  • Magnesium

  • Carotenoids

A lot of misinformation comes from the fact that avocados are high in fat. But these are healthy fats, which are great for:

  • Skin, hair, and nails

  • Absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)

  • Heart and brain health

Avocado also counts as 1 of your 5-a-day, but portion size matters! About 80g (half an avocado) is one portion. It is easy to eat a whole avocado, so save the rest in the fridge with the pit still in.

It is important to remember that avocado is just one part of a healthy, balanced diet. You don’t need to rely on it as a “superfood” - variety is what really gives your body the nutrients it needs.

Feeling guilty about eating avocado is more about our culture of “good vs bad” foods than the avocado itself.

Instead of guilt, try to focus on:

  • Enjoyment: Eat it because you love it.

  • Satisfaction: Healthy fats are nourishing for your body.

  • Balance: One food doesn’t define your day - your overall pattern does.

Remember, you can enjoy your avocado toast or salad without feeling naughty. Nourishment and pleasure can go hand in hand!
